Meaningful Use

The Regional Extension Center at Southern Regional AHEC offers services to assist practices in receiving incentives for achieving the Meaningful Use of their Electronic Health Records. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 included the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act that began the CMS EHR Incentive program. The CMS EHR Incentive program is available for eligible professionals who use an ONC certified EHR and meet the criteria and measures in the Meaningful Use program. There are 3 stages described for the program, and we are currently in stage one which specifies criteria that identify five different objectives:

• Improving Quality, safety, efficiency and reducing health disparities
• Engage patients and families in their healthcare
• Improve Care Coordination
• Ensure adequate privacy and security protections for personal health information
• Improve population and public health

The incentives for each eligible professional are up to $44,000 (Medicare) over five years, and up to $63,750 (Medicaid) over six years.
