The
Emergency Department of Cape Fear Valley Health
Systems is a 57-bed unit that provides care to
approximately 10,000 patients each month. During
the month, a resident will have the opportunity to
be trained to work efficiently and effectively in
this busy environment. The resident will review and
evaluate the appropriateness and safety of all
medications prescribed by Emergency Department
physicians while providing education to the staff
and patients when needed.
Resident Learning Activities
-
Obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support
certification.

Collect and document medication histories.

Initiate aminoglycoside and vancomycin regimens
quickly and accurately using pharmacokinetics.

Renally dose antibiotics based on renal
function.

Act as a liaison between the Emergency
Department and Pharmacy.

Research and provide drug information to the
staff of the Emergency Department.

Investigate and document allergies and reactions
when appropriate.

Document all interventions into the pharmacy
computer system.

Projects may be assigned.
