This
rotation will be located within the NICU, PICU and
pediatric floor at CFVHS. The NICU is a 40 bed,
level III unit, while the PICU is an 8 bed, level II
unit. The resident will have daily responsibility
attending rounds, reviewing patient profiles, dosing
various drugs along with performing pharmacokinetic
monitoring and answering questions for other health
care professionals. The resident will be an
integral member of a multidisciplinary patient care
team, and have the opportunity to strengthen his/her
knowledge base in the pediatric area while building
confidence as a clinical pharmacist.
Resident Learning Activities
-
Participate in daily rounds in the Neonatal and
Pediatric units
-
Observe the daily routine in neonatal and
pediatric ICU’s
-
Spend some time with NP’s/Physicians in Neonatal
and pediatric units (attending deliveries,
observe order writing, patient assessment, etc.)

Review patient profiles for appropriateness of
drug therapy
-
Develop problem lists and define therapeutic
goals.
-
Develop therapeutic drug plans along with
pharmacokinetic drug dosing.
-
Monitor drug therapy and enhance patient
outcomes.
-
Provide drug information and education to
health-care practitioners.
-
Assess and practice evidence-based medicine.
-
Give a least one presentation/in-service to the
medical staff (nurses, physicians, and/or
pharmacists, etc.)

Periodic topic discussions with preceptor
-
When appropriate, counsel patients or family
members on their drug regimen
-
Provide end of day update to 2nd
shift.
