Pharmacy Operations

Sandy Alexander, Pharm.D.

The resident will meet with the Assistant Director of Operations periodically to discuss various aspects of pharmacy operations.  The resident will staff the Main Pharmacy as required per the residency program requirements.  In the spring the resident will spend some time performing the role of Pharmacist in Charge.  During this time, the resident will perform supervisory duties and assignments.  He/she will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in specialized areas within the Department.  Projects will be assigned throughout the year.

Resident Learning Activities

  1. Obtain knowledge in all aspects of medication orders.
  2. Required documentation in modifying physician orders.
  3. Review of policy and procedures applying to medication orders.
  4. Learn pharmacy software for data entry to ensure accuracy of patient’s medication profile.
  5. Prepare intravenous admixtures using aseptic technique.
  6. Test in aseptic technique with IV Supervisor.
  7. Prepare chemotherapeutic agents observing safe handling.
  8. Label medication products following pharmacy policy and procedures.
  9. Obtain knowledge in repackaging of medication.
  10. Obtain knowledge in control substance process with review of policy and procedures.
  11. Obtain knowledge in staffing requirements.
  12. Obtain knowledge with Pharmacist in Charge reports and responsibilities.
  13. Gain supervisory exposure when staffing.
  14. Obtain knowledge in human resources.
  15. Complete projects as assigned.
