Target Audience
The target audience for this program includes Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, social workers, public health professionals, school-based personnel, care coordinators, care managers, allied health staff, therapists and clinicians working with children, adolescents, or adults, professionals serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), and all other interested mental health professionals.
Program Description
In this presentation, we will review the diagnostic symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and how they present across the lifespan. We will also introduce the learning differences common in autistic individuals and implications for psychotherapy. We will then cover the use of visual support and behavior problem-solving strategies for use with young children with autism and their parents. Finally, we will present specific strategies for modifying psychotherapy for autistic clients from childhood through adulthood.

Speaker
Dr. Kristen King is a Licensed Psychologist, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine, and a Staff Psychologist at the UNC TEACCH Wilmington Center. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Delaware. At the UNC TEACCH Wilmington Center, Kristen provides treatment services for autistic children, adolescents, and adults, using Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy treatment strategies, integrating these with TEACCH structured teaching principles. She also conducts autism assessments with children and engages in parent coaching and behavior problem solving with their parents. In addition, Kristen has been an instructor in the TEACCH School Transition to Employment and Postsecondary Education (T-STEP) program for autistic adolescents and young adults since 2019. Kristen provides workshops on the use of TEACCH structured teaching strategies in both clinical and classroom settings.
