Target Audience
RNs, LPNs, NPs, physicians, PAs, residents, paramedics, RN refresher nurse and all other healthcare professionals interested and licensed to administer IVs.
Program Description
This hands-on IV clinical skills workshop gives participants a practical understanding of the core principles and techniques of intravenous (IV) therapy. It is designed to help healthcare professionals develop the skills needed to perform IV insertions safely, confidently, and effectively while supporting high-quality patient care.

Speaker
Krystal Pendergraft-Horne, DNP, RN, FNP-C, CNE, is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing and a Family Nurse Practitioner with over 15 years of experience in emergency and acute care. She teaches undergraduate courses in health assessment and adult medical-surgical nursing and co-leads an interprofessional diabetes elective in collaboration with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, where nursing, pharmacy, and medical students learn together through innovative simulation-based experiences. Dr. Pendergraft-Horne was honored with the Anne Belcher Interprofessional Scholars Award (2025–2027) for her work advancing interprofessional education through diabetic simulation and received the Undergraduate Faculty Excellence Award from the BSN Class of 2024. Her teaching and presentations reflect her passion for equipping nurses with the confidence, compassion, and clinical judgment needed to manage diabetic emergencies and improve patient outcomes across care settings.
Learning Outcome
At the completion of this workshop, participants will demonstrate competency in performing safe and effective IV insertions using proper technique and aseptic principles.
Objectives
- Review the importance of IV therapy in patient care and familiarize yourself with the basic components of IV equipment.
- Discuss the step-by-step process of safely and effectively inserting an IV catheter, including site selection, vein palpation, and aseptic technique.
- Explore best practices for maintaining IV catheters to minimize the risk of complications, including infection control and site care.
- Enhance your skills through practical, interactive sessions where you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge in a controlled and supervised environment.

Contact Hours: 3.0
Nursing Contact Hours: 3.0 Nursing Contact Hours will be awarded to participants who attend 90% of this educational activity.
Southern Regional Area Health Education Center is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Substitutes/Refunds/Transfers
• Cancellations must be in writing (email or mail).
• Registrants cancelling between two weeks and five full business days prior to the first day of the event are refunded at 70% of the registration fee subject to a minimum $25 cancellation fee.
• No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than five full business days prior to the event.
• No refunds or credit will be given for no-shows.
• No vouchers will be issued in lieu of a refund.
• Transfers/substitute(s) welcome (notify in advance of the program).
