This program is designed for mental health professionals, healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of substance use disorder diagnoses.
Program Description
According to SAMHSA, 17% of the U.S. population has a substance use disorder (SUD). SUD is commonly called addiction. It refers to a group of diagnoses for which people can meet the clinical criteria. Examples of these diagnoses include alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder. Although these clinical criteria exist, not everyone is familiar with them. This program offers an introduction to substance use disorder. It covers the clinical criteria for diagnosing SUD and explores the various substance categories associated with these diagnoses. This training provides essential information for recognizing and understanding SUD based on the actual clinical criteria.

Speaker
Orrin D. Ware, PhD, MPH, MSW, is an assistant professor at the UNC School of Social Work. In addition to his role within the School of Social Work, Ware holds a secondary appointment as an adjunct assistant professor with the UNC Department of Psychiatry. Ware has graduate-level training in behavioral pharmacology, epidemiology, public health and social work. He has real-world practice experience as a clinical social worker in a specialty crisis stabilization unit for individuals experiencing a non-fatal overdose; a clinical social worker in outpatient/residential addiction treatment; and a community public health researcher on a mobile clinic for HIV in high-risk areas such as where sex work occurs and substances are traded. His research focuses on substance use and substance use disorders. To this end, he has published more than 60 peer-reviewed research articles covering topics of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, specialty services provided by addiction treatment facilities, and cat/dog exposures to drugs. Ware uses large publicly available datasets, electronic medical record, and primary data to conduct research.

• Registrants cancelling between two weeks and five full business days prior to the first day of the event are refunded at 70% of the registration fee subject to a minimum $25 cancellation fee.
