RNs, LPNs, CMAs, MAs, PAs, lab technicians, RN refreshers, nursing students, and all other healthcare professionals interested.
Program Description
This hands-on skills workshop is designed for healthcare professionals seeking to develop foundational phlebotomy knowledge and blood collection skills. Participants will review essential vascular anatomy, specimen collection equipment, patient identification procedures, infection prevention practices, and specimen handling requirements. Through instructor demonstration and guided practice, learners will perform basic venipuncture techniques in a simulated environment while applying principles of patient safety, specimen integrity, and quality blood collection practices. This workshop provides an opportunity to build confidence and develop fundamental phlebotomy skills that may be applied in clinical practice settings according to organizational policies and competency requirements.

Speaker
David Walker, BSN, RN, is a Clinical Nurse II with Duke University Hospital’s Vascular Access Team. With experience in emergency nursing, vascular access, and staff education, David specializes in phlebotomy, peripheral IV insertion, ultrasound-guided IV placement, and vascular-access troubleshooting. He has trained hundreds of healthcare professionals and is known for making technical skills understandable, practical, and clinically relevant. His teaching emphasizes patient safety, proper technique, and understanding why a procedure succeeds or fails—giving learners the knowledge and confidence to troubleshoot effectively in real-world patient-care situations.
Learning Outcome
At the conclusion of this session, participants will demonstrate competence in foundational phlebotomy principles and basic venipuncture techniques as measured by skills demonstration.
Objectives
- Describe the role of phlebotomy in supporting patient care and diagnostic testing.
- Identify anatomical structures and common venipuncture sites used for blood collection.
- Select appropriate phlebotomy equipment and supplies based on the collection procedure.
- Apply infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling, and specimen handling principles during blood collection procedures.
- Demonstrate appropriate preparation, site selection, and venipuncture techniques in a simulated practice setting.
- Perform basic blood collection procedures while maintaining patient safety and specimen quality standards.
Credit
Contact Hours: 2.5
Nursing Contact Hours: 2.5 Nursing Contact Hours will be awarded to participants who attend 90% of this educational activity.
Southern Regional Area Health Education Center is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Substitutes/Refunds/Transfers
• Cancellations must be in writing (email or mail).
• Registrants cancelling between two weeks and five full business days prior to the first day of the event are refunded at 70% of the registration fee subject to a minimum $25 cancellation fee.
• No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than five full business days prior to the event.
• No refunds or credit will be given for no-shows.
• No vouchers will be issued in lieu of a refund.
• Transfers/substitute(s) welcome (notify in advance of the program).
