Program Description
This presentation examines the complex challenges faced by young women aging out of foster care, centering both the lived experiences of young adult women and the perspectives of key stakeholders who support them. Attendees will explore the social, emotional, educational, economic, and systemic barriers that often emerge during the transition to adulthood, including housing instability, limited social support, mental health concerns, employment difficulties, and access to higher education and community resources. By integrating the voices of young women with insights from child welfare professionals, educators, service providers, and community partners, this session highlights gaps in support systems as well as opportunities for more responsive, trauma-informed, and empowering practices. The presentation is designed to deepen understanding and encourage collaborative strategies that promote resilience, stability, and long-term success for this vulnerable population.

Speaker
Dr. Nicy Bishop, PhD-Psy, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), licensed in the state of North Carolina, with over 11 years of experience. She became a counselor following retirement, as a Captain, from a 21-year Army career. Dr. Bishop is a faith-based counselor who services individuals, couples/marriage, and the family; and addresses issues including anger, anxiety, depression, grief, and PTSD/trauma. She uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) to deliver person-centered counseling. She facilitates several groups to include parenting, PTSD/trauma, and depression and anxiety. Dr. Bishop’s education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Tarleton State University, TX; a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Brandman University, WA; and a Doctorates in Psychology from National University, AR. When not working, she enjoys traveling with her husband and friends; and enjoys spending time with her children, grandchildren, family, and church family.
Objectives
- Identify common barriers faced by young women aging out of the foster care system.
- Describe the lived experiences and transitional needs reported by young adult women with foster care backgrounds.
- Examine stakeholder perspectives related to support services, system limitations, and service coordination.
- Analyze the effects of housing, education, employment, mental health, and social support on transition outcomes.
- Recognize the value of trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and gender-responsive approaches when working with this population.
- Develop strategies to improve collaboration, advocacy, and service delivery for young women transitioning from foster care to independent adulthood.
